The Coastal Conservation Association Maryland (CCA Maryland) is proud to announce the 6th annual Red Trout Tournament in Crisfield, Maryland

From September 28th through September 30th 2018, fishermen from all over the region will come to Crisfield to enjoy fishing this two day tournament amongst Tangier Sound's many creeks, rivers, reefs, and islands.

The Red Trout Tournament started in 2013, to celebrate Crisfield, MD, and the diverse fishing opportunities available nearby.

In February 2017, CCA Maryland worked with the Building Conservation Trust, CCA’s National Habitat Program, the Maryland Artificial Reef Initiative, Rinker Materials, and Engel Coolers, to build a new artificial reef just south west of Crisfield. The new reef is made up of almost 400 tons of concrete pipe, and is now be full of life.

The Crisfield American Legion is our home base for this event, and will be the location for the Captains Meeting on 9/28, Tournament party on 9/29, and Lines Out/ Awards Presentation on 9/30.

Thanks to the iAngler platform, the Red Trout Tournament is a catch, photo, release tournament. For 2018 our tournament committee has decided on new rules that award anglers for pursuing multiple species and to enjoy the diversity of the Tangier sound area.

We have Powerboat, Kayak, Fly divisons for adults, and the Bass Kandy Delight Youth division for CCA Youth members.  All divisions will have a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize. All anglers regardless of division will also compete for a prize for the single largest Red, Speck, and Striped Bass caught over the 2 day event.

NEW FOR 2018

The "Crisfield Slam" is a term we coined a few years back to define a multi species catch in Tangier Sound.  In 2015 we started a perpetual trophy that is housed at the American Legion and has a plaque for the team that has put together the best combination of the different species in the tournament.  In recent years the Crisfield Slam award has only been available for entrants into the Crisfield Slam Calcutta.

This year ALL DIVISIONS will be based on the Crisfield Slam principle, so make sure you come prepared to target multiple species throughout the weekend.

We have also added weakfish to the list of trout species and the full list of qualifying species and their legal minimum is:

  • Red Drum (18")
  • Spotted Sea Trout(14")
  • Weakfish (13")
  • Striped Bass(19")
  • Bluefish(8")
  • Flounder(16.5")

A perfect Crisfield Slam would be one of each species and all that reach the legal minimum per MD DNR rules.  While this might seem like a tall order, it is doable with the right tactics, weather conditions, skills, and luck.

The length of the fish will matter, but the most species entered will trump those who catch the biggest of only a single species.  The cumulative length of 1 fish of each species per angler or power boat team will be used to determine the overall Crisfield Slam length.  The cumulative length will be a tie breaker for those who catch the same number of species.

RULES:

1. Photo entry: This is a catch, photo, and release tournament using the iAngler Tournament System. ALL PHOTOS MUST BE CLEAR AND READABLE, and they must include the daily photo indicator, which will be announced at the captain’s meeting on 9/28 for Saturday’s fishing and after sunset on 9/29 for Sunday’s fishing.

2. Fish must be measured against an official CCA measuring stick. Kayak anglers, however, may use a hog-trough or a CCA measuring stick. Participants must present their rulers or measuring sticks to the judges if requested. If unable to provide a ruler for examination, judges may disqualify any catch or participant. Any ruler modifications must be approved by judges before the start of fishing each day.

3. Photos will be entered through the iAngler Tournament smartphone application. Participants without a smart phone or who experience technical difficulties may enter catches in person to judges before the end of photo submission deadlines, which are:

Sat 9/29: 6:00 p.m.

Sunday 9/30: 1:00 p.m.

4.Tournament judges reserve the right to examine the metadata of any photo image to confirm the validity of an entry. Photos with edited or missing metadata may be disallowed at the judge’s discretion.

5. Fish lengths are determined by length measured from the tip of the snout to the tip of the tail (you may pinch the tail). Put the measuring stick on the deck of your boat. Lay the fish on the measuring stick. Put the snout on the zero mark at the end of the stick. It helps to jam the measuring stick against a vertical surface to ensure that the zero mark and the snout of the fish are even. Fish will be measured to the nearest 1/8th of an inch.

6. In the unlikely event of a tie coming down to single fish or multiple fish measuring the same amount, the fish entered earliest will be the winner.

7. All prize-winning fish must be caught according to 2018 Maryland fishing regulations and must meet or exceed the minimum size as set by MD DNR. Participants should NOT submit photos of undersized fish.

Minimum Legal Sizes:

Red Drum—18"

Spotted Sea Trout—14"

Weakfish—13"

Striped Bass—19"

Bluefish—8"

Flounder—16.5"

8. Permitted fishing methods are: Fly fishing, light tackle, trolling, and bait.

Anglers fishing with bait must use non-offset circle hooks only.

9. Rods: No more than five (5) total rods may be in use from a power boat, kayak or by an individual.

10. Protests: A registered angler may protest another angler’s catch by filing a written protest with the tournament judges by the photo deadline on each day of fishing:

-Sat 9/29: 6pm

-Sunday 9/30: 1pm

The judges will convene a private meeting to determine the outcome of the protest and provide a final determination.

11. Compliance: All participants must be CCA members in good standing.

Failure to comply with any rule or regulation of the tournament, or law, rule or regulation of 2018 Maryland Fishing Guide, may result in disqualification of an angler or the anglers. Disqualified anglers shall not be entitled to any prize, award, or entry refund.
