Special Announcement Re: COVID-19

As of this time, the Tidal Potomac Slam is POSTPONED until further notice in accordance with local, state and federal guidances regarding public health concerns due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Contestants that have already signed up will be eligible to begin competing immediately once the tournament begins.

Full refunds for contestants are available upon request.

Fletcher's Fest remains scheduled for Sunday, September 13th.

In light of the current situation, the tournament will be offering several #savethecove social media contest prizes in the coming weeks.

The Tidal Potomac Slam– A Catch, Photo and Release Tournament

National Capital – Trout Unlimited, the Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders, CCA Maryland Greater Washington Chapter, Northern Virginia – Trout Unlimited, Potomac River Smallmouth Club, CCA-VA Northern Virginia and Backcountry Hunters & Anglers Capital Region are proud to present the third annual Tidal Potomac Slam fishing tournament. A multi-week event, compete for great prizes and bragging rights, while helping to support Friends of Fletcher’s Cove in its quest to restore the Cove and protect this unique urban fishing resource for generations to come.

Sponsored by Traeger Grills, FlyLords, District Angling, Speedwell Law, Patagonia, DC Department of Energy & Environment and the Potomac Conservancy, the Tidal Potomac Slam is a celebration of the arrival of spring and all of the migratory species that return each year to our Nation’s River! So join the fun and get in on this year's Shadness Madness!

American Shad, Hickory Shad, Striped Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, Carp (All Species), “Sunfish” (Bluegill, Pumpkinseed, etc) & Wildcard 

Format and Rules
Catch, Photo, & Release
o   All fish must be caught on artificial and flies only (no bait).
o   All fish must be caught on the Potomac River from the Woodrow Wilson Bridge to Great Falls** The C&O Canal is considered “in-bounds”.***
o   There is no minimum size limit for target species but all fish caught must be submitted to iAngler the day they are caught and safely released****  to qualify.
o   All photo entries must be submitted to iAngler with acceptable ruler in clear view. Unclear images will be up to the judges’ discretion.
o   Participants can fish for both divisions, but cannot cross-pollinate (ie a conventional-caught fish cannot be entered into fly category). 
 
PLEASE NOTE: THERE IS NO PRIZE FOR #OF FISH CAUGHT FOR ANY SPECIES (I.E. PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT 20 FISH FOR A SINGLE SPECIES/DIVISION).

Largest total slam (fly & conventional combined) in inches.
-  Winner receives large trophy and sponsor grand prize pack
 
o   Slam Champ (2 winners 1-Fly, 1- Conventional)****
-  Fly & Conventional - highest total combined inches of largest specimen for each target species 
- Winners receive trophy and sponsor Champion prize pack
 
o   Individual Category Winners (16 winners, 8-Fly, 8-Conventional)****
- Largest (by length)
- Winners receive trophy and sponsor prize

o   Most species (2 winners 1-Fly, 1- Conventional)
- Winners receive trophy and sponsor prize
 
o   First to catch all seven species (2 winners 1-Fly, 1- Conventional)
- Winners receive trophy and sponsor prize 

o   Largest Fish, any species (2 winners 1-Fly, 1- Conventional)
- Winners receive trophy and sponsor prize
 
o   Smallest Fish, any species (2 winners 1-Fly, 1- Conventional)
- Winners receive trophy and sponsor prize 

*Use of a fly rod, fly reel, and fly line with no restrictions on leader length or fly weight

**Boundaries: The tidal portions of tributaries that enter the Potomac River between these two points are considered "in-bounds" with the including the entire Anacostia River Watershed. To the South, the Boundary is the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. To the North the boundary is Great Falls. Participants should note that a DC license is required for almost all areas of this tournament, but a Virginia or Maryland License would be required for certain tributaries and areas such Roaches Run and the Spoils.

***The entire C&O Canal from its confluence with Rock Creek in Foggy Bottom, to LOCK 15 is considered “in-bounds”.

****Follow proper catch & release practices and handle fish with care at all times. Avoid stressing fish by bringing the fish to your boat as quickly as possible. If possible, please "keep 'em wet". If not, please ensure that your hands are wetted prior to handling a fish and do not rest a fish on the ground or surface of the boat. Photographs of fish in the water are sufficient, provided the ruler is visible and provides an accurate measurement of the fishes length. You do not need to use the iAngler App to photograph the fish. If faster, you should photograph the fish on your phone or camera and later import the photo into the iAngler app.

*****Each contestant can only win 1 prize. (i.e. the Champion of the Potomac cannot also win Division Slam and/or Category)

Failure to comply with any rule or regulation of the tournament, or law, rule or regulation of the the District of Columbia, State of Maryland, State of Virginia or United States may cause the disqualification of an angler or the anglers catch. Any registered angler so disqualified shall not be entitled to any prize, award, or entry refund.

For good and valuable consideration, including without limitation the acceptance of the registered participants entry or participation in the Tidal Potomac Slam (the "Event") and being permitted to participate in certain related activities, the registered participant, for his or herself and his or her personal representatives, heirs, guest, invitees, employees, and team or crew members hereby

(1) RELEASES, WAIVES, DISCHARGES, AND COVENANTS NOT TO SUE Trout Unlimited, Coastal Conservation Association, Fly Fishers International, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, Potomac River Smallmouth Club or their Chapters/Clubs or its Chapters, subsidiaries, related entities, respective members, volunteers, heirs, successors, assigns, officers, directors, employees, agents, contractors, sponsors and subcontractors, (collectively, the "Releasees") from any and all liability to the registered participant, his or her personal representatives, assigns, heirs and next of kin, and for all loss or damage, and all claims or damages therefore, on account of bodily injury, personal injury, death, property or other damage of or to the undersigned, his or her guests, invitees, employees, team or crew, during the Event or arising out of or in any way in connection with the Event or its Rules or related activities or while the registered participant is competing, or participating, regardless of whether caused in whole or in part by the negligence or alleged negligence of Releasees ;

(2) AGREES TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS Releasees and each of them from and against all claims, actions, causes of action, damages, liabilities, losses and judgments (collectively, the "Claims") of or by all guests, invitees, employees, and team or crew of the registered participant for bodily injury, personal injury, death, property or other damage which they may suffer or incur during the Event or arising out of or in any way in connection with the Event or its Rules or related activities, regardless of whether caused in whole or in part by the negligence or alleged negligence of Releasees; and,

(3) ASSUMES FULL RESPONSIBILITY for the risk or occurrence of bodily injury, personal injury, death, property or other damage of or to his or herself, his or her guests, invitees, employees, and team or crew and to his or her boat and equipment due to negligence of Releasees or otherwise during the Event or while participating in the Event or related activities or while in or on the Event premises, which includes but is not limited to, its common properties, recreational areas, and adjacent docks, piers, and boat slips. Participant further assumes the responsibility for and acknowledges all dangers associated with weather and sea conditions;

(4) Anyone entering this Tournament is required to abide by the Tournament Rules. Disqualifications will be determined by the tournament committee Any protest must state the rule violated and be received by the tournament committee photo Check-in Deadline. All team participants, including team members, guides and boat drivers are responsible for knowing, understanding, and abiding by these Rules. Failure of any team participant to follow tournament rules or procedures will result in disqualification of the team in violation or non-compliance.
